Week 18 – Final weekend of the regular season

Camilla Paterson

After a long hiatus, we are back baby!

What a remainder of a season it has been with my courageous Texan Bulls delivering a perfectly gift-wrapped Win on Christmas Day (Australia time). The games preceding and subsequently were not much to talk about, but wow, what a nice Christmas present; Santa delivered!

We also cannot overlook wrapping up the regular season appears to be a twist of fate with my original seed picks (click here for our first podcast for a laugh) fighting over the lowest rank in the competition, both aspiring to claim the wooden spoon or the NFL equivalent.

The final games of the regular season have wrapped up with an exciting weekend of footy. As for my beloved Texan Bulls there is still a lot on the line here, according to my always positive (with regards to my Bulls) husband. George has assured me our boys are in a sweet spot for the 2024 draft… Whatever that means…I’m not entirely sure, but I do like a good sweet spot.

To set the scene for those as unwitting as me to see this game and to the best of my knowledge, going into this weekend’s games we were set for the number One spot for the draft… (Drafting?? I’m sure George will educate me of this importance down the track).

However, to my understanding going into this game (Our final for the season), if we win and the Chicago Bears (my other pick for top seed this season) lose this week, then we get bumped out of the number one spot, resulting in them getting first pick, whatever that refers to. Is the number two pick really that bad?

With that in mind, lets jump into it and break down my Houston Texan Bulls final game of the season. For those unaware, we unfortunately have not made it into playoffs this season. Our boys started strong after kick off at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Mills (#10), Cooks (#13) and Atkins (#88) produced an exciting first set, enabling Atkins to score the first touchdown of the game. Our defence was equally as impressive, resulting in a solid turn over early on. The always on point Fairbairn (#7) secured 4 points early with conversions and field goals. The Colts slipped in a sneaky touchdown towards the end of the quarter.

The boys held onto a strong lead of 10-7, they came out tough in the second quarter until an unfortunate interception had a hand over to the Colts. In something that can only be described as a marvel, the very next play our Johnathon Greenard (#52) was prime positioned, intercepted and ran an incredible touchdown. What a hidden gem of many talents he is! The boys felt the fire ignited with our defence smothering the Colts like gravy on poutine, each and every time the Colts edged closer to a touchdown. This was evident with Christian Kirksey (#58) with a well-executed interception in front of the Colts endzone. Equally, Dare Ogunbowale’s (#33) fancy foot work and spins were just as exciting to watch as a die-hard for the first time.

Our Texans bounced into the third quarter with strong defence of deflections, even holding out the Colts going over at the 10-yard mark. Things took a change of direction with the commentators indicating the Bulls trying to throw the game on purpose during the third. I don’t know what game they were watching? I know Lovie has coached the boys to give it their all till the end. This was clear from our Tremon Smith (#1) being dragged across the Colts’ endzone on the players back. We retaliated with Mills (#10) and Quitoriano (#84) making up great yards as a counter to the Colts’ touchdown, setting up the scene for Akins (#88) to push away from the Colts with a touchdown of his own. Even with all this excitement and determination, the commentators couldn’t help slip in the sly remarks of our Bulls throwing the game when the Colts made a corner touchdown with less than a minute remaining.

Both teams were trying to prove something, entering the fourth with the Texans leading by 3. The pressure was felt by all with both teams cranking up their eager and ‘try anything’ plays. The Colts stole the lead early with a well-orchestrated touchdown making for an intense quarter. The Texans pulled out their all with the last minute and a half to try pull back their lead with Mills (#10) and Cooks (#13) putting forward an excellent on point play, allowing us to gain 30 yards, with two time-outs up our sleeve surely something could be pulled out. Mills (#10) felt the pressure on 4th & 20 delivered an incredible throw to Akins (#88) scoring a superb 28 yard touchdown, clean, crisp and to the point. Somebody’s been practising; where was that all season? (50 seconds remaining we get word the Bears lost their game). Coach Lovie decided to go for broke and Mills threw to Atkins to complete he 2 point conversion and the win!

Wow, Wow, Wow, what a game! Hold your head up high boys, you played phenomenal!

Houston Texans 32 Colts 31. Lovie had to be proud of the boys efforts throughout the game allowing the Texans to rest on a high.

What does this mean for the draft… I don’t know, I’m not entirely sure what the draft is about, stay tuned.

Keep it together!
