The Ignorant Wife Speaks! Week Two Texan Bulls Recap!

Camilla Paterson

Davis Mills our Texan quarterback, I did it! I learned something new about the game. He has a good arm, but the aim, well let’s just say he is working closely with Pep Hamilton, the Offensive Co-Ordinator, with an excellent reputation and Coach Lovie Smith, there is a lot of potential here. He has the right support and can go the distance, and just like the rest of the boys he is finding his footing and big things are brewing. I have to say after George pointed out the Quarterback is sort of a big piece to the game, it made it easier to follow the plays. Let’s not tell him that though...

Okay, lets rip this off like a band aid. The Houston Texans were defeated by the Denver Broncos over the weekend 16 – 9. I know, I know, I was a little shocked as well.

Let’s jump into the break down.

Being a home game for the Denver Broncos there was a sea of orange in the stadium which is to be expected. Derek Stingley Jr (#24) one of our defensive backs had great game with multiple key plays making for an exciting game to watch. Yes, he was eager to jump the gun at times, hence I learnt about the yellow flag penalty, specifically pass interference. With this in mind, I still gotta’ say, I love the energy and occasionally these things will happen in the heat of the moment, especially for a young Bull.

Our defensive side was quick on their feet and hard hitting to the point some of the Broncos didn’t know where they were and needed a minute, Okay, okay maybe at times this game is a little harder hitting then I first thought. I also enjoyed the low tackles our defensive team were serving throughout the game, I said it before and I will say it again, some of these boys can fly, the padding is even making a little more sense in certain circumstances. I even noticed a few swinging arms in the defence when there was the odd pile on or take down with cover, well played boys.

Great work by our Bulls holding out the repeated attempts of touchdown by Broncos in the first quarter. The boys read the play and held tight with strong defence resulting in only a three point field goal instead. We could handle that.

Our attacking side produced some good plays, including a few dummy runs or as it’s known in the NFL world a play action passes. They were timed well and allowed for us to gain yards when needed.

Nico Collins (#12), had a great game and is an excellent receiver on the bulls, I’m looking forward to a few more completed plays between him and Mills.

Ka’imi Fairbairn (#7): incredible boot with the ability to easily make over 40 yard field goals like it ain’t no thing! With Ka’imi on the field, I became more aware of the special teams within a team. George was quick to point out “They only matter if they miss,” which raises the question: was does a kicking game look like?

Okay, okay there was even a couple times when we went backwards, clearly getting as confused as me with the game at times.

Pass interference - need to look like they are going for the ball more, looking back more, etc. Rather than their main agenda to take out their mark…Isn’t that the whole point of the game?

Personal fouls – so minor, not deserved in my opinion in the 2nd quarter? Personal foul, face mask by Denver, dodgy. Some necessary as this can be extremely dangerous.

The first quarter I was worried we would be out played, as the Broncos were strong and it was almost like our boys needed to stretch into their positions, feel out their way and warm up. Something we need to move past in future games. Once the 2nd quarter rolled around the boys were communicating, delivering some great plays and continued with a strong defence. I particularly enjoyed our lead in the 3rd quarter, with a great steal and turnover by Christian Kirksey (#58). In the beginning, the boys looked tight and were testing out the Broncos defence finding weak links in the chain. 4th Quarter…

Wow, what a start boys! A different team emerged from the break, giving away the ball and letting an easy touchdown through. A bit disappointed to say the least, the boys tried to redeem themselves, but by this point, I feel the damage was already done resulting in far too many incomplete passes and taking out kicking nets instead of the opposition . It was clear the Broncos were happy to wind down the clock with the last few minutes of the game holding onto their lead.

Overall, a game I enjoyed. More fast paced than game one, with lots of potential for growth from the boys and they should walk away with their heads held high, for the majority of the game anyway.

On a side note, a little disappointed the players heavily influencing some of the referees’ calls, in particular the Broncos. I have to say a few times I felt like I was watching soccer or cricket instead with the theatricals.

Let’s jump into the rest of our games this week and see how my predictions went, keeping in mind these games were purely chosen on names, logos and week 1 results;

Chiefs Beat Chargers 27-24 (A Win)

Patriots Beat Steelers 17-14

Giants Beat Panthers 19 -16

Jets Beats Browns 31 - 30

Jaguars Beat Colts 24 – 0 (A Win)

Dolphins Beat Ravens 42 – 38 (A Win)

Buccaneers Beat Saints 20-10

Lions Beat Commanders 36 -27

49ers Beat Seahawks 27 - 7

Rams Beat Falcons 31-27

Cardinals Beat Raiders 29 - 23

Cowboys Beat Bengals 20-17

Packers Beat Bears 27-10

Bills Over Titans 41 – 7 (A Win)

Eagles Over Vikings 24 – 7 (A Win)

Okay, so looking at these results, not such a good week for my picks. George has finally out predicted me. With that in mind, the only way is forward, and I feel just like my Texans, teams are starting to move into their stride for the season, meld together a little better which will hopefully result in a game more entertaining than we have seen to date.

Keep it together!
